DecoArt Debunks Myths about Decorative & Craft Painting

DecoArt Debunks Common Myths about Decorative Painting/ Craft Painting

Along with Jean Kievlan, a craft-painting industry expert with more than 20 years of experience, DecoArt has asked and answered some of the most puzzling questions about why one would choose to paint as a craft. Now there are very little excuses left... It's time to pick up that brush and learn to paint!

Q: Doesn't painting require a lot of time?

JK: Well, to be honest, drying is what takes the most "time" in the painting process. You'll need to make sure you have adequate coverage on your surface. Using a quality paint like DecoArt's Americana can truly cut down on your "time" investment to this great hobby. You also save so much money, because with Americana, you get one-coat fine coverage, which saves you from buying more paint, by using less.

Also, have all of your supplies on hand before getting started on a project. Having a real "plan" means all the difference in being truly efficient. That's where Project Instructions, such as those found on DecoArt's Project Library come in handy. These instructions tell you what surfaces and embellishments you'll need to create a project, or give you great ideas to make them your own.

Q: Speaking of surfaces and supplies, isn't this an expensive hobby?

JK: I've told my students time and time again- using quality craft supplies make all the difference in the world. Again, you just can’t beat DecoArt's coverage from their Americana line. Like any hobby, you’ll have an initial investment, but because of DecoArt's shelf-life, you’ve have little waste, which is great for the environment and your wallet.

Q: Do I have to be talented before I begin to craft paint?

JK: Absolutely not! There's no right way or wrong way to paint as a craft and hobby. Even the easiest of craft painting projects can be made easier- simply paint what you're comfortable with, but don't be afraid to try something new.

You'll also be surprised what having the right tools (quality brushed, quality paint, quality surfaces) can do for your end project. I've seen students with a rather meager skill level turn out beautiful crafts- all by using the right tools!

Also, learn from the ones who have painted before you. Time-saving tips and techniques have been tested by individuals who have been there, done that. Take advantage of these "shortcuts" to give your project an upscale look. For example- Stripes are a very hard concept for beginning painters, and take a rather skilled hand to create. But, with the use of common painter's tape, even someone who just picked up a brush can create a clean, even line!

Q: Is that it? Do you only ever paint someone else's design?

JK: Any design is a good basic starting point—and those designs have been tested to give you the best finish and to ensure painting success. However, there isn’t a rule that says you can’t choose colors that you like, add embellishments that you love and change the look of someone else's design to create your own!

Dimensional embellishments have always been a popular way to make the ordinary, extraordinary. If a design calls for a simple petal flower- Don't paint the center! Add buttons, pearls or rhinestones. The possibilities are only limited to your imagination!
